Coaching is a “Win-Win”

In the world of nonprofits, fundraising plays a pivotal role in driving their missions forward. Navigating the complex landscape of fundraising requires not only dedication, but strategic expertise. This is where consultant coaching comes into play.
I recently served as a coach for a new executive director eager to learn more about their new role in fundraising. We set out a series of topics to cover and spent one hour on each. As the coach, I spent several hours in preparation, making sure to find current statistics and articles for the client, as well as reviewing the non-profits budgets and fundraising plans. The discussions were informational and informal while allowing me to adapt each topic to the organization’s mission and culture. This customized strategy aligned with the director’s unique goals, strengths and challenges. The personalized approach also ensures that the implementation is effective and feasible.
As a consultant, we not only provide expert guidance, but skill enhancement, drawing on our years of experience and customizing the topics for the client. We are asked for training on essential fundraising aspects on topics such as capital campaigns, relationship management, event planning, board management and much more.
Most importantly, we offer an objective perspective to the work of the nonprofit. Sometimes fundraising teams are so entrenched in their work that they don’t see the big picture and tend to get frustrated with the details of fundraising. Their efforts do not produce the desired results, putting more pressure on what a demanding job is already.
In the business world, coaching allows one on one time to develop a new relationship as colleagues, not just about the topics at hand, but also finding personal connections. The best coaches tend to be excellent listeners and the most curious. These relationships will continue for years to come.
Today there is a webinar, TED talk, or a YouTube How To video on almost everything. What is lacking is the two-sided conversation and discovery that occurs in a coaching relationship. As you look at the projects to come, find time for yourself to investigate the coaching process. This can be a transformational partnership that empowers an individual or a group of individuals to work together with a seasoned professional fundraiser for impact and lasting change. It is definitely a win-win situation!
